My SEO 101 Presentation from Faith+Tech

On Monday, February 13th, I presented at a meetup called NYC Faith+Tech, which was founded by my friends from Faithstreet. They asked me to present on SEO 101, to help people know what SEO is and what they can do on their site to make it friendly to search engines.

I took at 10,000 foot view. There is so much more I could have gone into, and next time I’ll take my friend’s advice and walk people through optimizing a website. I realized as I put this presentation together that going back to the very basics on something you know well is very challenging to do!

If you have feedback, I’d love to hear it.

  1. Hey John – I am getting ready to finally launch a personal blog (very much inspired by your work here) that will contain both some marketing and travel themed material.

I am torn between launching the blog with much of my content already there or simply scheduling the content I already have to be posted every few days for the next couple of weeks while I produce more.

Do you have a personal preference?

Thanks for everything you do here. You’ve been an awesome resource for me for quite a while now.

    1. Hey Sam! Sorry it’s taken me a few days to get back to you.

My preference is to launch with one awesome article (think try to get on top of inbound.org and HackerNews level) and have a lot more ready to go. Get on a posting schedule (I try to post every Tuesday and Thursday here) and at least push yourself to publish content those days. You can always do more, but don’t do less.

Good luck! Let me know when it’s up and I’d love to read it.

      1. Thanks for everything John – I would definitely love feedback once its up and running. There is sure to be a shout out your way.

  2. John,
I thought your presentation was great. The downside of seeing a deck without your commentary is that it makes it a little harder to share with a couple of friends that I think would benefit because it’s not all totally self explanatory. (like what the links mean, what certain definitions are for us novices). That said, what you’ve got here is great. You know what would be helpful (as if you have time for this!) would be to do a “white paper” version, know what I mean? It wouldn’t be that long, mosty bullet points with a short version of what you said in the talk that would serve without the pics (not that they aren’t fun, but mostly not needed).
I’d love to sit down with you sometime and get a hands on tutorial for the things I’m not confident about. I might pay you in beers. 🙂

    1. Thanks Elizabeth. The hard thing about presentations, I guess, is that they are always better in person. I’d love to get together and discuss it more with you!

  3. Great Deck! I also like the FaithStreet Site, was trying to create the same kind of thing for a little while ago, but, I always have so many ideas running through my head, and so little time, it got pushed to the side =P …..Cool site though! And once again, Awesome Deck! But you are definitely right, it needs more on optimizing your own website. A great thing to add to the FaithStreet site (I may have just missed it) is the option to Optimize a church’s website. It would be a great “upsell” when a church subscribes since you will be getting the direct contact email for the church!
