Why I’m Not Building A Search Marketing Agency

Why I’m Not Building A Search Marketing Agency

Most of my friends are building their own search marketing agencies these days, and they’re succeeding beyond their wildest expectations. Many of them have 5-15 employees, are doing seven figures a year in revenue, and are doing fantastic work for their clients. I often get the question (I was asked it twice just this past […]

My Entrepreneurial Journey = PermissionLess Podcast

My Entrepreneurial Journey = PermissionLess Podcast

I love storytelling and helping other entrepreneurs build their own lives. But at the same time, I’m also laser-focused on building my own businesses and learning as many new things as I can. Just this month, I’ve learned a ton more about AdWords (and still quite the newbie) and Facebook advertising. I’ve also jumped into doing some Local SEO with a family member to bring them more business.

Why Doesn’t ESPN Own 538.com?

Why Doesn’t ESPN Own 538.com?

I’m (unfortunately) pretty outspoken about politics this year, as any of my friends on Facebook will tell you and most of my Twitter followers know. I’ve avoided writing about politics here so far. And I’ll continue that with the brief mention that you should have a plan for voting tomorrow. With that out of the […]

Solving Enterprise SEO Duplicate Content Issues

Solving Enterprise SEO Duplicate Content Issues

I don’t do much solo consulting these days, but when I do it is almost completely with digital marketplaces (if you want to chat with me about your marketplace, you can do it here). These sites always struggle with mass duplicate content issues, which is likely why you are here today.

A marketplace (like my own B2B marketplace Credo) seeks to balance both the supply and demand sides so that a) sellers can make a profit from their involvement and b) buyers have enough variety/choice to have a great experience on the site or service.

Dollar Shave Club and Content Marketing

Dollar Shave Club and Content Marketing

Dollar Shave Club, the disruptive direct-to-consumer shaving blades and products company, just sold to Unilever for 1 billion dollars cash. One billion dollars for a four year old company that sells razors! I am a happy Dollar Shave Club user myself. I was previously a Gillette Mach 3 user but was tired of the exorbitant […]

Finance Night

Finance Night

When I wrote my story of getting laid off and why I’m an entrepreneur now, I mentioned something in the section about figuring out your financial runway. What I mentioned there was Finance Night, which is something my wife and I do monthly. It’s been surprising to me how many people liked this idea. I‘ve […]

My Biggest Professional Mistakes

My Biggest Professional Mistakes

Recently I saw Jason Lemkin tweet his answer to “What Has Been Your Biggest Career Mistake?“, and it got me thinking about my own. I’m not quite a decade into my own professional experience, but after seven jobs and numerous positions, promotions, and a layoff I’ve made my share of mistakes. And what’s more fun […]

Why I Hate The Term “Lifestyle Business”

Why I Hate The Term “Lifestyle Business”

If there is one term in the tech/entrepreneurship world that makes me grate my teeth (more than my TMJ already does), it’s the term “lifestyle business”. SEE? Didn’t that just make you shiver and want to punch someone at the same time? I severely dislike this term, which is often used when comparing a business […]

GravityView is a major WordPress cheat code?

GravityView is a major WordPress cheat code?

I’m building my company Credo on WordPress these days. I recently overhauled my business model, moving from a commission-based model (which is a nightmare to track and a “business model” built on hope not business) to a subscription SaaS model.

Because I’ve been building on Credo on WordPress since the beginning, I have a decent bit of architecture in place already.

I’ve been using Gravity Forms as my lead capture solution, and as I was building out the new version of Credo I was able to implement (with the help of a fantastic developer I found) a lot of functionality that I’ve needed, such as one form across all of the profiles on the site. On Being Willing To Fail

On Being Willing To Fail

Too many of us live our lives in fear of failing. While some have a fear of flying, I think that once you’ve been through some great successes you no longer fear doing too well. The goal becomes to also be okay with the opposite – failure.

Anyone who is driven and wants to succeed must come up against this. It’s easy to stay in the known and optimize towards a 3-4% better conversion rate, but what happens when you want to 10x your business in the next few months? You won’t get there by doing tiny changes that get you .25% better (unless you are building off a huge base already). You have to change your mindset. Read more about On Being Willing To Fail
